The Best Looks from NYFW 2025

A beginner’s guide to finding your style

Let me know if you can relate to this: you have an event to attend or an outing with your friends, or even a date with Mr. Handsome that finally caught your attention. But there’s one big problem, a problem that determines whether you leave the house or not.

Finding the right outfit.

And do you know the funniest part? Your closet is absolutely full of clothes. Then my mom would be like, “What do you mean you don’t have clothes to wear? What’s in your wardrobe?” One of my friends said, “I have many clothes, but not outfits”. Which, honestly, I think that’s the best way to put it.

It’s literally my perfect excuse for staying at home sometimes. I love how we have all resorted to calling that one friend who’s a pro at picking outfits and can save us from this dilemma.

Why Do We Struggle with Outfits

Let’s pause and rewind. ask yourself:

Why do I have a wardrobe full of clothes but still struggle with finding outfits?

What kind of outfits do I actually like?

Am I wearing clothes that suit me?

Do I know which outfit flatters my body type?

Some of you might not have answers to these, but worry less. I have done my research, and I’ll walk you through the steps to finding your own style.

Why Finding Your Style Matters

Your style reflects who you are, which is your personality, values and lifestyle. It’s one of the easiest ways to express yourself without words, through clothing and accessories.

Beyond expression, style boosts your confidence.

There’s this quote I keep saying to myself: “Look good, smell good, feel good.” And it’s so real. Whenever I put a little effort into dressing up, I step out wearing the brightest smile, head held high, because deep down I know I look good.

Curating your wardrobe around your personal style makes it feel more authentic, like it truly represents you.

Exploring Different Fashion Styles

Now that we know why style matters, let’s uncover the various fashion style categories you can connect with:

Minimalist Style: Neutral tones, timeless pieces, simple silhouettes.

Classic Style: Tailored pants, button-down shirts, structured blazers.

Bohemian style: Flowy fabrics, earthy tones, eclectic prints.

Streetwear: Oversize(baggy) fits, sneakers, graphic tees, hoodies.

Romantic Style: Feminine cuts, lace, soft colors, delicate accessories.

Edgy Style: Darker palettes, leather jackets, distressed denim.

Which do you connect with most? Personally, I lean towards the romantic style category. I’m such a girly girl to the core.🌸

Building Your Style: Step by Step

  1. Assess your wardrobe

This is the best starting point! Your own closet.
Take everything out, look closely at your favorite pieces, ask yourself:
What do I wear most often?
Which outfit gets me the most compliments?
What outfit makes me feel confident and like my best self?

Notice any common themes, colors and textures. Those patterns may just be your style, and you can stick to them.
  2. Explore different aesthetics

You don’t have to play it safe when it comes to fashion. Try experimenting with pieces you wouldn’t usually wear, just like Sabrina Carpenter’s bright looks, Zendaya’s bold look or even Audrey Hepburn’s minimalist looks.

You don’t need to shop for a whole new wardrobe; rather, make do with the items in your closet. I have listed out a few style categories above. Try whichever ones you have and see if it can be your thing.
  3. Gather inspirations

    Make Pinterest your best friend,

    mood board
It is a great place to get inspired, create mood boards, save your favorite celebrities’ looks, or if it’s a style set from a TV show you love, save it!
Now take a step back, notice recurring colors? Structured fabrics? These visual collections are clues to your true style, so you can start off by recreating those outfits.
  4. Consider your lifestyle
Your daily life has an influence on your wardrobe.

You’re a 9 – 5 worker, you most likely own corporate shirts, tops, office pants, suits or blazers, etc
You’re the social butterfly. You should have party outfits, accessories and streetwear fits.

Your closet should align with how you live.
  5. Learn what flatters you

Think about those outfits you wear that instantly lift your mood or get you compliments, mentally note them right now.

You’re Curvy? You might love simple silhouettes that outline your figure.
Dark Skinned? Certain bright colours make your glow pop. Note them.
  6. Experiment slowly

Fashion is a journey and should be fun and slow; You don’t need to be a fashionista overnight. Take small steps; Be patient with yourself, because this journey can be influenced by your life experiences or even moods.
